Zack "Flytrap" Jaeckels grew up poor neighborhood in Veloran city on Jarcata III, a planet in a system close to Lume. He amused himself when he was younger by playing pranks on people, and was very adept at getting his food by stealing then running away. Later, he learned a gang and demonstrated a natural ability to drive hovercars. This made him a very valued getaway driver. However, just hovercars wasn't enough for Zack; he wanted to become a pilot and fly fast in space.
When the Dark Flame Pirates visited the world, Zack broke into their camp, stole one of their hovercars, and had them chase him around the city. Using his abilities he got away, then returned the hovercar to the pirates, and stated that he wanted a job as a pilot. Several of the pirates wanted to kill him for his little stunt, but Little John, realizing that the boy had skills that he could exploit, hired him on the spot.
He earned the nickname Flytrap when the Dark Flame Pirates visited Rentash VII, when he got too close to a Rentash flytrap. The flytrap tried to eat him, but didn't like the taste so it spit him out.
The only two things that really hold Flytrap's interests are mischief and speed. He does have knack for annoying people; Kronk has chased after him on occasion (with no success so far - he's just too fast). Little John is pretty good at getting him back in line (usually by whacking him on the head). Like Kronk, he will occasionally play with Vortex's robots until they break. Tatyana seems completely immune to his pranks, so he thinks she is no fun and only messes with her when he's really bored.
